I don't know gents. I listened to this song many times today. Yes, I know that it practice it's associated with rocking and sports games and what not, but it you take the lyrics literally it may be deeper than that. A boy playing kick the can (common childhood game) thinks he's going to be a big man some day. As a young man he thinks he's going to take on the world, waving his banner(whatever he believes in) all over the place. As an old man, defeated, poor(never defeated th world, it defeated him) just looking to make peace. The "we" in we will rock you being society, the man, etc. Have your hopes and dreams, but "we" will rock you.

This song was concepted from the claps in the crowds at football stadiums. The "clap clap" that rises from the audience to psych out the other team and encourage the players.

"you got mud on your face; you big disgrace- kicking your can all over the place"-- reference to the players learning how to play in the streets with tin cans as young kids- they're going to be big men some day, taking on the world.

Now; like most queen songs they are completely open to several interpretations. I am not claiming this to be the correct version, but its another voice.

#5, you're wrong. This song has nothing to do with gays/bisexuals, 1) because it was written by Brian May, not Freddie, and 2) How the hell can you get homosexuality out of the lyrics "We will rock you?" I just don't see how.

Anonymous you're an ahole what is wrong with you?

It was written by my grandfather and he's not gay. Also it's not funny to be making fun of gays.

I found an interesting take on the song by anon at this link: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/45350

Basically they think it is about the rivalry with the band Kiss.

Feb 2010 ESPN magazine interview with Brain May: Queen decided that it needed a simple, anthemic tune that could connect with the audience. The morning after the show, May woke up with a stomp-stomp-clap beat rolling around in his head. To accompany that big rhythm, he sat down and wrote depressing lyrics that described the futility of man. The lyrics begin with a young man dreaming of a better life, in the second stanza the boy is now a young man battling to reach lofty goals and the song ends with an old mans dreams unfulfilled. The chorus is not a rally call. It is a Czech lullaby which a parent promises a child " we will, we will rock you." Great article by Seth Wickersom tracking down the meaning of the most popular stadium anthem. The song was recorded in an empty church because Queen loved the acoustics.
