The song is about Dave King going away from his home, to get a better life in the USA. After 8 years he finally returns and sees his mother again (who stayed in Ireland all that time). She suffers from having her child so far away from her, but she knows that her son will never succeed were there are no opportunities. So she says, the son (not sun) never shines on closed doors. He will never be as successful if he stays with her in Ireland. When she dies she hopes she can someday meet with her son again in the afterlife.

Dave King talked about an experience about flying back to Ireland to see his mother after 8 years, and she didn't recognise him immediatley because he had changed so much. That's what it's about.
