Okay onto the interpretation... the narrator is a young singer but instead of just saying that, he says "I'm not a preacher or sinner all I have is slight of hand, I do magic tricks for all the boys in the band" He's just met a girl he admires and wonders if he could be the one for her. - Baby could I be the rabbit in your hat? I'd swing if you hand me the bat. Meaning if she would give him a chance, he would certainly take a shot. Chorus: I'm the on the road... he's just going with the flow and not forcing what he wants because he is afraid of a committment. He's never been in this position before but he's enjoying the thought of being with this girl however, she disappears quite easily or slips though his fingers.
