John Hiatt: Adios to California Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Adios to California Lyrics
-
The song is a telling of events which happened to Hiatt in the 1980s, particularly revolving around the suicide of his ex-wife who was the mother of his child and how his life in California was abruptly uprooted by that. The lyrics touch on how difficult it is to continue living in a place where you have suffered a life-altering traumatic loss. When a loved one commits suicide unexpectedly, it can feel as if you never really knew them at all for not knowing of their battles with suicidal ideation. This is spoken of in the lyric "Two cigarettes from the package gone, you must've thought about it just that long. I never knew you were so strong-I guess I never will." Contrary to other posts on here, the song is NOT about impotence. The song being about suicide of a loved one has been verified by the artist.

It's about Hiatt's wife committing suicide and his subsequent move with his child from California to Nashville.
