Song opens in an abusive household in the early 1970’s, a violent stepfather verbally then physically assaults the mother, and our protagonist seeks escape by seeking refuge by running and hiding. He listens to dance music for the repetition and familiarity of the genre; This can provide the mind with some structure in an otherwise chaotic environment. There is an obvious reference to a terminal illness or addiction that’s eroding the mother’s health. Our teenage narrator chooses to run away from the increasingly uncontrollable situation and again return to self soothing practice of listening to repetitive beats and songs.
