It is my song too. My high school class is 1957, We have used the song many times over the years for our reunions.

The Class of 57 by the Statler Brothers is about growing up. In school they, young and naive, believe their generation is going to be the one to change things and make a difference.
The viewpoint of the song is looking back through those dreams 20 years post-graduation. Time and the cold hard facts of reality have made it apparent that they have and will not change anything. Rather they're just living very average existences, much like the generations preceding. None of them have improved society or changed things, rather they have pedestrian occupations like doing hair, selling insurance, working for Ford, etc.
An older, yet timeless song. I think anyone a few decades past graduation can listen to this song and relate.
