Ziggy Marley: Beach in Hawaii Meaning
Beach in Hawaii Lyrics
I wish you were here with me Walking on the beach in Hawaii Playing on the golden sand Looking at the ocean, now I understand
Love is like the open sea And I wish you were here with me On the beach in Hawaii

Ziggy is singing about his father, Bob Marley, who died suddenly when He was only 12 years old.
The lyrics, "...looking at the ocean, now I understand" is his way of saying, "now that I'm older, I can understand and appreciate the beauty and peace of the ocean that you always saw and I was too young to comprehend".
One of the final lyrics that cements the interpretation, "I'm on a rocky cliff, oh I wish you were hear with me on the beach in Hawaii", is a metaphor for Ziggy walking a slippery slope and needing the guidance and advice of his loving father, Bob.
It's beautifully written Ziggy, and well said. I lost my dad unexpectedly too when I was about your age, and I often wish for the same things that you express in this song. Remember, he is always with you - as my dad is always with me on a beach in Cape Cod.
