This song is about how her sister died when Amy was 6 and her sister was 3 she was first told that her sister had passed on while she was in the school yard this is shown in the first line ‘playground school bell rings again’ I think this song shows how when you are 6 you don’t quite understand what is going on and she didn’t quite believe what was happening ‘soon I know I’ll wake from this dream’ this song is basically how she coped with losing her sister at such a young age
I would also like to point out that on the open door there is a song called like you and I believe that song to also be about her sister and how much Amy misses her ‘I long to be like you, sis, lie cold in the ground like you dear, there's room inside for two, and I'm not grieving for you, and as we lay in silent bliss, I know you remember me’ I don’t think this is so much that she wants to die but that she wishes she could be with her sister.
Both these songs were written completely by Amy Lee when most evanescence songs are not just written by Amy. She put her soul into the song.

Uh, no. Obviously to all the Evanescence dum dums, it's about her sister dying when she was little and how she coped.

Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken
those lines are so haunting, and it could mean anything. I think it means someone she loved has left or died, and everyone thinks she's heart broken, when actually she just wants to cope herself
Hello, I'm still here
People are talking about her but not noticing she can hear everyword, like when you wlak into a room and suddenley everyone goes quiet

It's actually about her little sister dying when Amy was three. Her sisters name was Bonnie Lee, and she wrote that song for her.
"If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream"
She doesn't want to believe it, so she says it didn't happen but she knows it did.

It's about how Amy Lee was feeling when her sister, Bonnie died.
Playground school bell rings again
rain clouds come to play again
That's about everything going on around her that used to go on when she wasn't feeling her pain.
has no one told you she's not breathing?
hello I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to
hello
that's when Amy got the news that her sister was indeed unfortunantly dead. and her conscience is talking to her to try and calm her down.
if I smile and don't believe
soon I know I'll wake from this dream
that means that she doesn't believe it at first but then realizes it to be the truth. I feel bad for her... by the way ppls I"m her bigest fan, besides my buddie Jordan! ^_^

The song is about Amy's sister, but anyone that has lost someone really close to them, can relate to it a lot.

wow this is a beautiful song. It is about amy's 3 year old sister, bonnie dying. Amy lee was 6 at the time, and the opening line about the school and playground is because amy found out that she died at school out on the playground. Amy was mortified. She wrote this song trying to send an important message, which is kind of hidden. Sheis trying to say that if something hoorible happens in your life, you should try to 'wake up' from it, it happened already so it is true. This song has a lot of meaning. I don't want to be too full of myself but I am 99% positive that this 'interoetation' is correct. good day/night/morning/afternoon -- what everone fits best!
see ya!

Like some people said before: the song Hello is about coping with the loss of her little sister Bonnie that died in 1987. Amy was 6 and Bonnie was 3. She has never performed this song live. Only a home video (that can be found on youtube) is the only time you can see her play or sing it besides the studio version recording.

When I first heard this song I didn't know anything about Amy's past, and the first thing I thought about was a child dying, or a childhood friend's death.

Well I know this about her sister and all that stuff..
But this is why I love it so much;
It reminds me of my childhood and being seperated from my bestfriend/cousin. We we're so close, but now we're not. It's like dead, but we're not. "Has no one told you she's not breathing?" makes me think it's a metaphor for Did you know you can't go back to the past?"
"If I smile and don't believe, soon I know I'll wake from this dream." is [though my eyes] saying 'my smiles are empty without you but I'll wake up soon, but I really won't'
"Suddenly I know I'm not Sleeping, Hello I'm still here, all that's left of yesterday.." is like saying 'This isn't a dream, I'm really awake, and it seems like yesterday we were together."

Bonnie died from an unidentifiable illness.
The song "Like You" from The Open Door with the lyrics, "I long to be like you, sis, Lie cold in the ground like you did," also hinting at the death of her sister and her grief for it.
I hope this helps <3

The songs about her sister dying when she was young and her not really understanding it, and learning as she grew older in life. Not about a little girl in a coma, or a blind girl.

I was just reading all these interpretations and the song came on. I have like 1200 in my playlist. I freaked out! Lol!
We all know it's about her sister. I don't know how many people need to say the same thing over and over again.
Besides music can be interpreted however you want it. Amy wrote it about her sister, but someone could see it fit into a different situation that they're going through. That's the great thing about music. There's not one rule to follow.
But in all honesty I just read 2 pages of the same thing. People trying to outdo each other by writing the same thing but with fancier words. Come on people!

Those are all decent attempts at interpreting Hello but like most of the brilliant ones in here, the song is indeed for her sister who died. FYI--'Like You' on the Open Door album is the "Hello" of The Open Door

It's about her sister Bonnie dying. I think it was from an illness.. and she doesn't play it live- I don't think it was really written for the fans- she wrote it for her family and it was only meant to be heard live by those who need it- those who knew Bonnie- not to mention the stress of singing this or 'Like You' live- I doubt she could do it without crying on stage.

I agree with everyone who says this song is a dedication to her sister, but I've always looked at this song as if it were through the eyes and mind a young teen who was dying from suicide and now, moments before his/her death is having some final thoughts and reactions to the world around them.
"Playground school bell rings again
Rain clouds come to play again"
These first lines in the song are what tell me the age of this person, "school bell" we know they're of schooling age, (I just place this person as a teen because I can't imagine a younger middle school or elementary aged person doing this) and "Rain clouds come to play again" indicates some sort of inner feeling every time that school bell rings; a dark "rain cloud" over your head feeling.
"Has no one told you she's not breathing?"
That’s a paramedic telling the parent of this dying person the situation.
"Hello I am your mind giving you someone to talk to"
Then the dying's mind comes in once they've heard the paramedics comments (a.k.a this dying person is thinking to themselves in a surreal state.) The dying person lies unable to move and screams "Hello” in an attempt to speak to this other world going on around them.
"If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream"
The dying person now thinks this is all just a horrible dream they can't wake up from, so they figure they'll wait it out until it’s over.
"Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken"
This is the dying person telling paramedics, trying desperately to revive him/her, that they are not broken because to this dying person there is no concept in their mind that this is reality.
"Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry"
This is his/her third person almost reminding them of their decision to kill themselves, and that now they don't need to "lie" to themselves anymore so they can "hide" from this world they're leaving.
"Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping"
Dying person realizing this is no dream...
"Hello I'm still here"
Again, this dying person screams one more time to get the attention of those around him/her. (The vocals at this part especially, indicate the struggle from within this person)
"All that's left of yesterday"
'Yesterday' he/she was a living being and now their body is all that remains...
I usually don't put my interpretations into these websites, but I am now just because I haven't seen this point of view brought up anywhere. Let me know what you think, if you understand where I'm coming from. I think it helps listening to the song as you read my lyrics 'break down.'

This song is about Amy's sister dying and how she's living with that. Honestly, I've had a few people whom I love dearly die...including my boyfriend about a year ago. I'm not really coping well with it because I'm choosing to believe that it's not real at times. I talk to him if I'm sitting in a room alone and I still try to call his (obviously disconnected) phone, believing that he's just angry at me. There is no easy way to cope with things like that and I understand how she'd view things. So yea...this is her coping.

I know this song is about when Amy Lee's younger sister died.
I think when she says 'playground school bell rings, rain clouds come to play' she is saying that everything carries on as normal even though this tragedy has happened.
When she says 'if I smile and don't believe, soon I know I'll wake from this dream' she is saying that she doesn't believe this is happening. Soon she'll wake up and realise that it is just a bad dream.
When she says 'suddenly I know I'm not sleeping' That's when she realises that its not a dream, that she's really gone.
And when she says 'all that's left of yesterday' she is saying that her memory of her sister is all she has left.
