Dirt Lyrics

I have never felt such frustration

Or lack of self control

I want you to kill me

And dig me under, I wanna live no more

One who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be

I've tried to hide myself from what is

wrong for me

For...

It’s written about Demri (Layne’s longtime girlfriend). In a magazine article where AIC is interviewed about the release of the album Dirt, Layne is quoted saying “The song ‘Dirt’ was written to a certain person who basically buried my ass…” He is also quoted saying “The album cover…. I like to refer to it as ‘revenge.” Even though Layne never refers to Demri specifically, 99% of us AIC fans know who he is talking about.

You can clearly tell what the song is about and or what the lyrics mean.

It's about Kurt Cobain. Laney is describing his feeling of admiration and and frustration at Kurts seemingly effortless ability to create, preform with his raw talent and rise of success.
Laney has to struggle through life but he's a decent guy and gets on with it.

It's more deeper than that . . . In 2020 cancel culture plays a vital role in suppression of talent. This is a positive song . . .it's about breaking those chains and getting out alive.

It may not have to be about a single subject. While this is attributed to Layne, Jerry also contributed and it may have had to do with drugs, a relationship or Layne's father all in one. The most likely is a relationship or his father - Cantrell himself stated that only Sickman, Godsmack and Junkhead were about drugs.

You are all wrong. It's about his father in the Vietnamese war, and PTSD.

Probably bullshit all about parents or drugs (which both are on various sites) Listen to Paris, France 15/10/93, he says that this one is about a beautiful little girl who tore his heart out - "fucking little bitch" as he says - so similar to love hate love - maybe the same girl.

It's a song about abuse, definitely. I'm not sure if it's similar with 'Angry Chair', which means that Layne talks about his parents abusing him, or with 'Love, Hate, Love' and 'Confusion' which is about Layne treating bad his girlfriend. The first one makes more sense, because Layne said he's been treated awfully by his father and he always wanted to become famous because he thought that if he was a celebrity, his father would care about him.
It's an amazing song, the lyrics are so heavy and badass, the music is also great and the guitar riff just blows your mind.
Awesome Alice In Chains, once again.
Rest in peace Layne Staley, rest in peace Mike Starr.

His father left him as a child and later returned when layne had become famous. They did drugs together then he disapeared again. Put 2 and 2 together plus troubled past and that's the meaning of th song

It seems he was abused by his parent(s) and, unfortunately, he was a kid and couldn't get away (I've tried to hide myself from what is wrong for me) and therefore he is frustrated and has no self control and doesn't want to live anymore. When he talks about someone that doesn't care shouldn't be, I believe he can't believe the fact that his parent(s) dont' care about him and treat him the way they do, and someone who treats their kids that way shouldn't exist. When he says

    "You, you are so special

    You have the talent to

    make me feel like dirt

    And you, you use your

    talent to dig me under

    And cover me with dirt"

He talks about how he was raised and pretty much that his parent(s) him feel like dirt and how good they were at it and that they pretty much affected the rest of his life by how terrible they treated him and how he will never be normal because of it.

I hope this all makes sense because it makes perfect sense to me!
