Rap Song Meanings
Let's get a shout-out to the DJ all up in here! Rap is an important, seminal genre in Western music, serving as a bridge between old-school rhythm & blues forms and modern hip-hop. There are dozens of spin-off and fusion genres, mixing with R&B, hip-hop, ska, blues, reggae, house, dance, electronica, jazz, funk, and even more diverse genres.
Rap got its big start in the US around the 1980s. This is when big inner cities found themselves invaded by boombox beats and turntable DJs. But let's also not forget that for a brief while, rap crossed cultural barriers before settling once again on being a sound largely associated with urban cultures. The great dichotomy in rap is the split between west-coast, east-coast, and the "dirty-south." The interplay between these separate sects eventually saw gansta rap dominate the genre, although other styles have held their own over the decades.
