Emo Song Meanings

Everybody hurts! When you need some music that gets you right in the feels, you're looking for emo. Emo stands for "emotional" and has been considered kind of a fringe genre, but it's actually forked from punk rock, new wave, and indie, so it can be considered as "the less cynical, socially sensitive punk" on its way to goth rock with a stop in the middle at pop.

Contrary to the stereotype, emo isn't about depression or sadness and emo fans are not all compulsive self-cutters. Most emo music is melodious, upbeat, and has a positive view of the world. Emo also leans to the progressive side, ranging from techno and synthesizer styles to traditional classic stadium rock. And its lyrics are especially deep and philosophical.
