   This song has a double meaning. It is contrasting the search for happiness (needle in a haystack) with the helplessness and lack of motivation derived from drug abuse.
   
   Skiba's lyrics are littered with double meanings... Every other reference to drugs has had another, deeper meaning in Alkaline Trio songs. There's no reason to think he changed his writing style for this one song.

   Clearly it's the option between the needle and that "needle in the haystack." it applies to both. An argument between the two is ridiculous when it is supposed to be both. The choice is the point.

   "My little needle" means my needle in a hay stack. The thing you have been looking for.

   This song is about heroin. It's about how you sell all of your possessions so that you can buy more. Skiba also hints that his drug use is because he has no woman in his life, or because a woman left him ie. "I'm tired of sleeping alone" or "make some change for a world that needs some/like I need someone."
