   A boy and a girl who where the closest of friends, both developed feeling for one another. However both were to afraid to telling the other, out of fear of jeopardizing the friendship that they had.
   She starts going out with another guy.
   The after he starts seeing someone, she comes and tells him that she has secretly had a crush on him.
   The song is his reply to this, admitting that he also has deep feelings for her, but they both have significant others and that she was a day late in telling him.
   'A Day Late' is referring to the time difference between them both being single and secretly in love and currently where they are both in a relationship with someone else, but their friendship is just as strong, if not stronger that ever.

   Its a song about a girl that finally admits that she has always loved the guy but could never really muster the courage to tell him. he knows its sincere coming from her. he USED to love her the way that she is confessing it to him. He knows that the door is still open to something even though its probably passed. If she had only said something earlier they could have been together. He goes on to state that neither of them are who they used to be, suggesting that it has been a long time since they last talked. he says "you are so much more than i remember" meaning all those feelings he used to have are still there and might be rushing back... "all these years and you were no where to be found" she has been out of his life for so long so she has probably gone down a wrong path in her life and realizes what she really could have had with this guy. He will always be her friend and always be there for her even if she disappears for years at a time...

   It's about how these two best friends (a boy and a girl) could have been "lovers" but the girl was always dating some other guy. But it also it kinda about the scorn of bein only the best friend to a girl he loves.
