He's been dumped by her. She wants to stay friends. He says something like "You're asking if we can still be friends" and she asks "Please come out with us tonight" but he replies "I would rather be alone than pretend I feel alright". But he does seem to be feeling more positive by the end of the song when he says "Now I'm ready to start". I take this to me start living again. I love this song!
