Songs about Freedom

"Freedom isn't free" - don't you agree? "Freedom" can be a word that betrays heavy jingoism in the militarized industrial world, or it can be a desperate cry in the darkness in the third world. Freedom is something you can't appreciate until its gone. Yes who is truly free? Quite a few citizens in all nations will assert that they have it the best, and yet they haven't traveled abroad so they have no basis for comparison.

Without defining it in the political sense, freedom can also mean a personal sense of liberty, free of the fetters of social cowardice, free to be oneself and express what one truly thinks no matter how much the Hivemind doesn't like it. Artists, by their very nature, care a great deal about this kind of freedom - because that's the only way to be creative. Or as the Prophet Frank Zappa (peace be upon his name) said: "Without deviation from the norm, progress is impossible."
