Coconut Skins Lyrics
and show her how you cry
explain to her your weakness so she understands
and then roll over and die
or you can brave decisions
before you crumble up inside
spend your time asking everyone else's permission

first two verses to me are very much about the type of person you can be in relationships. The third verse is saying you can be stubborn and all the rest of it if u want but its not who he wants to be "you can sit on chimneys with some fire up your ass". The forth to me is referring to rolling joints and just chilling, In this verse he has chosen his path and doesnt care what people think. I think the whole song is actually quite upbeat. "tell her your searching for her soul" this to me is saying you can try to justify yourself but you're really just lying to yourself so be who you are. The line I love the most is "time is contagious and everybody's getting old" this is just saying stop wasting time and live.

I really like this song- it's the only one by Damien Rice in fact that I enjoy listening to the most. I think that the first verse infers the need to conform in order to achieve one's own happiness, " asking everyone else's permission, run away and hide" I feel shows that even if accepted, people still doubt themselves. I think that the fourth verse is about sex and the meaningfulness of it- the singer includes " lie between her legs" and follows with " searching for her soul". This lyric I think is incredibly important to the song. I also like " time is contagious, everybody's getting old"- it feels like an expression of waiting, as if fear is a disease. I think Coconut Skins is about the importance of love despite a sense of personal failure, which I think is inferred. A really great song whatever the view.
