I am most comfortable interpreting this song as a song sung by an imaginary lover who is about to be displaced by a real person, and will no longer exist when the person who imagines this lover starts the relationship with a real person.
The very notion that this singer might commit suicide if the singer is abandoned is too depressing to even contemplate, as my own father and almost 20 years later my oldest son chose to end their life in this manner
