It's about a conversation between two children who are playing jump rope that an adult overhears. It's really sad because the conversation reveals negative things that adults (often unintentionally) teach children like dishonesty, racism, and unloving relationships. Also, they continue to play the game throughout the conversation which shows that they see nothing shocking about what they are discussing; its just every day life.

I was born in So. cal, and am a black dude. I heard this song in the ‘60’s / 70’s… I’ve always had difficulty understanding song lyrics- but the song’s repetitive chorus was all the I completely understood! The internet mentions the real title as being’ …get a rope!’ Now THAT song’s meaning was perfectly clear!! E. W.

This is a bold song about generational racism and lynching. The parents are the races. Skip a rope is a message about the many lynchings that took place, sadly. It is much deeper and darker than a tune about family troubles and a remarkable protest song for its genre, core fans and era.

I was 10 years old when my older brother bought this record for my parents to listen to hoping they would get the meaning. We lived it, breathed it - too bad someone does not re-release this song - it's how we were raised but society has only made it worse for generations to follow. We can't throw 100% of the blame on Mom & Dad- the following generations simply added to it where now we have school shootings and the rest of this nasty society has become. yes - skip a rope!

    Sincerely,
The Little Sister still having that terrible dream!

I heard today that some fools want to replace the national anthem, this song should be in consideration for a replacement

Song written in the 60's. Song so true. Yes,there was racism between black & white. There was booze. There was drugs. Hatred.Love. Yes,relationships shown in many ways both good and bad. Parents didn't care to much teaching right from wrong. Yes,children see and hear everything. Yes....Mommy and daddy are who is to blame!! Skip a rope.

Someone said "It takes a village to raise a child". Skip a Rope exemplifies that. It's not just parents, neighbors, teachers.... anyone can ruin a child by the example they set on a daily basis. Sadly, most just don't care.

It shows how children listen to their parents and the parents are totally unaware of how negatively they affect the way the children see the world. They accept it as normal behavior because that's what they see and hear. They don't know better because of their innocence, unless you teach them a better way of being and right from wrong they will continue to make the same misguided mistakes and prejudice as the last generation and accept it as normal behavior.

Hate your neighbor for the shade of his skin. Racism and cheating is in it too.
