Not an interpretation but I think the lyrics would resemble the feelings from someone going into prison and those years are the sentence given.
Hoping it will end soon, there will good and bad events ahead. The phone, the mercy from the prison to communicate with the inmate. At some point, it is talking from the person that stays outside, who believes the other side of the truth, that the prisoner actually didn't commit the crime despite the evidence, etc.
At that point it is only the family or some people that hold a rope of help, keeping in touch or just providing support.
