Locked In The Trunk Of A Car Lyrics

They don't know how old I am
Found armour in my belly
From the 16th century
Conquistador, I think
They don't know how old I am
They found armour in my belly
Passion out of machine-revving tension
Lashing out at machine-revving tension

Brushing...

Confirmed by Gord Downie himself, this song is about the FLQ and their abduction of a former Government Minister Pierre LaPorte (my history isn't great anymore but I think LaPore was Quebec's Labour Minister) back in the 1970s when Pierre Trudeau was the Prime Minister, eventually leading The War Measures Act being invoked in Quebec.

The Song came from a conversation at the Harb in Owen Sound. That is a bar and they allowed customers to stay and eat after bar closed. The phrase refers to living with your emotions from what someone did that was horrible. I destroyed the man I can't believe done it.

i always thought of it as a metaphor for all the dark things we carry with us in life. our conscience never lets us escape the dark places in which we find ourselves.

Waaaay overthinking it (natural when one tries glean meaning from obscure works that one considers the product of genius)

It's just a dark homage to a mad serial killer in the first person.

Those lyrics , if they are about Laporte's death, are so obscure and meaningless that the song has no interest , even as a metaphor for Gordon's human condition ! No point of view just confusion and clichés .

I think Gord is talking about losing his inhibitions so he can dig deep inside and reveal himself and be as honest as he can be when writing. When he says,"Its better for us if you don't understand", he means that if the masses were uninhibited then people wouldn't need artists to live vicariosly through. He feels like he is locked in a trunk but he, "dumps the body". This rids himself of inhibitions and he can write honestly.
