Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me Lyrics

You don't know how you took it
You just know what you got
Oh Lordy you've been stealing
From the theives and you got caught
In the headlights
Of a stretch car
You're a star

Dressing like your sister
Living like a tart
They don't know...

I think this song might actually be about Madonna, because of the line
"and you're turning tricks with your crucifix"
    - Madonna went through a phase of combining sex with blasphemy on stage and in the video "Like a Prayer". There's also an urban legend which may or may not be true, that she was ex-communicated from the Catholic church. When I hear that line about the crucifix I always think of her.

I agree that the theme of the song is the trappings of being a celebrity, and how, ironically, a famous life is also one of the most isolated. According to the lyrics, a person becomes famous because whatever they do becomes, for reasons that are not entirely obvious to them, trendy and popular. They're thrust into the limelight, in which they are constantly living under the media's (and thus, the whole world's) microscope, without knowing if it's really what they want. Supposedly, they're popular and beloved public figures, but in reality, their "fans" really know nothing about who the celebrity is, nor do they truly care about their well-being.

Basically, the themes are summed up in the lyrics "They want you to be Jesus/They'll get down on one knee/But they'll want their money back if you're alive at 33." The public will latch onto your bandwagon and supposedly worship you, saying that they love you and care about you. But in reality, they don't know enough about you personally to care about you, and they're too wrapped up in their own lives to truly worry about your actual, human well-being. Essentially, the overall message is: when you're famous, you may appear to be extremely popular, but at the core, you're hopelessly alone and isolated from your fellow man.

This song is clearly about the subject of celebrity. How the media and public tugs and pulls at you. In way defies a celebrity ('they want you to be Jesus, go down on one knee, but they want their money back if you're alive at 33)
    Brilliant! Hat's off to Bono!
