   He has recently broke up with a woman. He can’t stop thinking about her. He sees her happy after the breakup. He didn’t want to bother her. Why ruin her apparent happiness?
   Flashback. He remembers when she was happy with him. But HIS happiness wasn’t ever the priority in the relationship, Zach was always focused on her happiness rather than his own. “So, what if I said…happy instead… is the way that I reckon it should be”. He’s wishing he is dead while she is ok. By the end of the song we see that he is so far past this relationship that he has completely forgot about it. He has finally chosen his own happiness over her’s without even realizing it. Now, if she called she would be wishing she was dead. And he’s ok.

   Zach loved so deeply he at first didn’t want her happiness but as he aged he realized that the only way he can move on so he decided he should be happy. But once he was happy she decided she wanted that connection again that was already gone for him

   The song talks about a man who is deeply in love with a woman. He realizes that she is much better off without him and chooses to let her go, he is very much hurt by this but justifies it as he is letting her be “happy instead”. Ten years later she contacts him. He realizes that he’s spent so much time focusing on her being “happy instead” without him, that he hasn’t noticed his own happiness.

   Singer view is having an affair with someone else, they want the other person to choose and be happier instead with them. The other person does not want to/doesn’t leave. Eventually, the singer gets over it and chooses to be happy instead. Ten years later the other person is still thinking of them and the singer view has moved on.
