Rocky Raccoon Lyrics

Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
And one day his woman ran off with another guy
Hit young Rocky in the eye Rocky didn't like that
He said I'm gonna get that boy
So one day he...

I had my brother ring me up one night asking what the f**k was the meaning to this song and what was the connection between rocky and Gideons bible. It had been on his mind for years.Sometimes our curiosity to things can have greater consequences than our small minds can take. Timing is sometimes the pivotal mark. I was in great distress when he rang (first time to ring me in very many years)and I told him that I was standing on the promises in that Book (the bible) for my life. Rocky found that same Book in his room too but didn't realise it was what he needed. If only he had opened it up his life would have not ended so soon. We all have a choice to make. From that phone call, my brother decided to pray for me. It's called Providence.

Well I think the former interpretation by Lonnie is quite well thought out and could potentially be true. I'm not too well versed on every little thing to deal with the history of the Beatles, however, I know that they do actually present meaner lyrics that are much deeper than they appear, this is not to say that all their songs are like this, in fact many of their song are merely popish boy band songs, however, many of there songs do indeed have deeper meanings, and tell stories of such things. So quit giving him shit about something that he put his effort into explaining to you pricks

Holy sh*t! You need to take a chill pill there, dude! O.k., have you ever heard of bands that write lyrics and turn them into stories? Look at country! they have stories all the time! Honestly, I don't know where you get off with all this nonsense! Its a f***ing Story!!!!

I like that. It's almost certainly not true- songwriters just don't take that kind of approach to their lyrics. But that's not the point. It's a nice interpretation.

The key to interpreting this song is a little known t.v. news report from 1966. The subject was a possible attempt by the Gideon Bible people to add their protest to John Lennon's "the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ" statement. The report said there were two attempts made by the Gideons to place dozens of their Bibles in the Beatle's hotel rooms, and again in the seats of the airliner taking them home at the end of their 1966 U.S. concert tour. There were supposedly two Gideon attempts made, and coincidently two Gideon mentions made in Rocky Raccoon. If one does what I did and ask yourself if there were a possible connection between the incidents of 1966 and the song, then you will do the same thing I did and ask yourself what all the other terms, words, and phrases in the song mean. The result is that every important word in the song has a hidden double meaning. Get yourself a copy of Rocky Raccoon, lay it right beside what I'm about to write, and compare it for yourself.
Now somewhere in the American deep south, also known as the Bible Belt
There lived a lot of adult Christian Americans
And one day their teenage children became Beatles fans
And then John Lennon made his infamous, "more popular than Jesus" quote.
The adult Christian Americans didn't like that, said we're gonna bring the Beatles down
So one day they started showing up at Beatle concert sights to protest
With Adult Christians protesting, the Gideons decided to join in
The Adult christians had come, equipped with protest paraphanalia, to bring down their rival, the Beatles
The Beatles it seems had broken their dreams by stealing away their teenage children
They were called by any number of terms used to describe teenage Beatle fans
Now the teenage Christian children, and the Beatles, were together at any one of several concert sights
The adult Christian Americans showed up to protest and in essence said, "hey Beatles this is a showdown"
But the Beatles were at the height of their popularity, They made light of John's statement with explanatory interviews
And the Adult Christian American protests gradually faded away
na da da da da da da, da da da da da da
Now Brian Epstein came on worldwide news broadcasts
Suffering with his own drug addiction
And proceeded to soften the damage with explanations
He said in essence, "hey Christians you've met your match", and the wiser Christians essentially said,"hey Brian, it's only a scratch, and we'll overcome all this when the time is right".
Na da da da da da da, da da da da da da
Now with Christians still protesting, the Gideons tried again
But with the failure of both protest attempts the Gideons went back to doing what they did best, and that was putting their Bible is hotels.
****Please get back to me and tell me what you think>****
    Lonnie.

Here's the key. In 1966 John Lennon made his infamous "the Beatles are more popular the Jesus Christ" statement just before they launched their latest USA concert tour. A storm of protests arose from the Christian Right. A very vague and little known footnote of all the protest hoopla was a supposed attempt by the Gideon Bible organization to place dozens of their bibles in the Beatles hotel rooms, and possibly even aboard the airliner taking them home after the tour. There was a report that Paul McCartney even dispatched some people to check and clear the rooms if need be. It was, oddly enough, not until years later that something caused me to wonder why Paul used "Gideon's Bible" twice in this song. On closer examination it appeared to me that Rocky, his girl, the doctor, the saloon, etc., all could have deeper, and possibly factual meaning. That question in turn brought about it's own answer, and opened the entire song up for a complete interpretation of every word and phrase in the song. Why Paul has never mentioned the hidden meaning in any interviews is open for question, but it's all there. I'd be glad to discuss this with anyone interested, and I have rewritten the song in it's interpreted form as well.

The strong is straight forward pretty much. There's a guy, wants a girl, another guy steals her, he tries to fight him for the girl, loses, goes back ro his room and finds the bible.

I think because I've read that in early drafts it was called Rocky Sasoon that it may be about an experience Ringo had. R.S. Is his initials whether he is Ringo Starr, or Richard Starkey.

It's about rocky and how his girl was stolen by another man, so he goes to kill the other man and steal back his girl. Instead, Daniel shot him first and the drunk doctor comes in all drunk and lays down and tells Rocky that he's met his match. So rocky goes back to his room, only to find Gideon's bible. and in the end the bible doesn't save him, you can hear the lyrics say "I'm sorry rocky but.."

This song is the best. It means that a cowboy didn't believe in religion but at the end it helped him, so said the Beatles.
