I read somewhere that, at least on the surface, Quinn the eskimo referred to the actor Anthony Quinn in the movie "Nanuk of the North."

The Song made famous by Manfred Man in the 60's is about The coming Messiah and how it will be "... when Quinn the Eskimo gets here everybody's gonna jump for joy"
