   I think it's about confusion in the face of death. Although Justin wasn't good friends with Heath, he was curious about what his death meant. It's such an obscure subject which makes us feel a lonely hollowness inside due to our intolerance of ignorance.

   This song was actually written because of Heath Ledger's death. Justin Vernon's manager was very close friends with Heath, and took his death extremely hard. Justin wrote this song in memory of Heath.

I think it is only important to feel it, everyone will create his own story to the song which depends on his present situation or maybe special happenings in the past. The song is special, it has something that goes really deep. You here it again and again, but instead of becoming less intensive it gets even more powerfull.
