Christina Perri: Penguin Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Penguin Lyrics
To let your lover love you?
He only wants to show you
The things he wants to learn too
The hardest parts you'll get through
And in the end you'll have your best friend
Love like this may come once
Baby it's...

I’ve had a message around this song recently so I found it and listened,
The penquin is gay……….
This story is about an angel looking down on a penquin who’s lover is finding it hard to understand if he’s the one, there are questions in the other lovers head about if he’s the one for him or should they lose them and just be alone.
Sure he loves him but he’s struggling to decide if he’s the sole mate he needs, the lover is also scared to let go and fall in love because he’s scared the penquin may hurt him but she’s saying, he’s your penquin he’s your sole mate. The message is the two lovers are actually at a crossroads because she has to reassure one that “the hardest parts you’ll get through and in the end you’ll have your best friend” the angel is asking the lover of the penquin to “let go let go let go” this could be a stumbling block in the relationship that’s made one question if they are sole mates. The angle is saying he is and now it’s time for “you and I”
It’s a message to the lover of the penguin that he should find time for him and let go and in the end he will have his best friend.
The angel also needs the lover to find the time to “let your lover love you”
If the lover chooses not to listen to the angle he may never have another shot with a sole mate as after all you only get one.
The angel is on both sides.

maybe it's just cause this is similar to an experience I'm having right now, but somehow I always interpreted this song as her talking to a boyfriend, who turned out to be gay? and he didn't want to accept that or be with his soulmate (who is a guy) out of guilt/shame but Christina is telling him it's okay, and that he has to take the chance because it could be his only chance at being with a soulmate. i don't think that's the meaning she meant for, but it's the one i have always felt.
" HE'S the one that you were born to love" -
"He only wants to show you...He needs somebody to hold to..." are lyrics shedding light on how the lover feels too, something that is often and unintentionally overlooked in a relationship/marriage. Is this person important enough to want to nurture them as much as you want to be nurtured? “The hardest part you’ll get through” is an important lyric because it’s a test of your true self to see if you are selfless enough to let him show you how he loves as well, as we all have different ‘love languages’. “His arrows aiming for you…” confirms he wants to feel this way also, if you will allow him to. If you truly want a soulmate, you have to let them show their love in every aspect…something that can be a challenge even though we all want to think we are capable of this.

I’ve listened to this song throughout the last ~8 years, and after applying it to a lot of situations or relationships I have/had, the beginning of the song is not so much her speaking to someone she knows, it’s as if she is speaking to you and you alone or she’s referring to herself, talking to herself in order to first adjust to this idea of such a huge commitment to something, a soulmate in this case. The song transistions into her clearly talking about herself and her needs that she now realizes after singing about it for the first few stanzas. It’s really more of a transformation song, if you look at it that way the song has so much more depth and strength both in action and in the heart of it. The light-hearted accompaniment holds a much stronger commitment, really a beautiful song.

For me it's as if Christina in the beginning is talking to the listeners of the songs or as if she is talking in third person. Trying to get them to notice their "penguin". At the end she is reflecting on herself (first person), talking and recognizing her own penguin. When she says "Let go of time for you and I" I thought she wanted her penguin not to focus on the time but live within the moment with her.
-
I think the song is about someone who is telling a best friend (or someone else she cares about) that the guy sheare with is perfect for her, and if dating/marrying him means that the friend needs to be seperate from her best friend, its ok to "let go of time for you and I" so she can be with the person who is perfect for her. In the end she is saying that she would want the same thing ("love like this, is all I want").
-
I think the very first part of her song is her telling a friend that the friend's guy is very innocent and anything he's doing he wants HER to see and gets excited like a little kid to show HER things he has discovered. And when you find this person, he's the right guy for you and she needs to see that. The rest of her song is telling you once you find this special "penguin" or forever lover you need to hang on to him and to be greatfull you found him and make time for him, not get lost in the busyness of life.
-
At the beginning, I think she is telling someone she cares about, like her best friend (hint hint), that their lover cares about them, but her friend is not looking at the love. But towards the end, Christina falls in love with another person and she wants to be loved like how her friend's lover treats her friend. The Penguin part really means a Love Forever. The "Let Go" part confuses me a bit. But that's how I see it.

She said her nickname for her boyfriend is "Penguin" ..so she wrote this about him. He is her soulmate, mated for life, like penguins.
-
maybe shes trying to say to a friend or family member, "hey this person your with, they're right for you, and you can let me go and start your life with them if that will make you happy." just my interpretation. :)
