   I think when he wrote this song that there must have been a hugely popular singer on his mind, that, in his opinion, lacked depth, and talent, but still was able to woo crowds. Simon was always trying to explore, expand, and experiment with sounds and lyrics. Surely that was not always smooth going. In this song he both acknowledges and snubs this type of performer. I just wonder which performer he was referring to, or was it many?
