it's more like he loved her, but never told her, and then it was too late. Maybe the girl was untrusting? "Do you like the way you feel / Nothing hurts when no one's real", almost as though she didn't want people getting close for fear of the pain when she lost them. "She's not looking for the holes in all the lies"... She is fine accepting the fallacies about love for what they are, not seeing the exceptions. "I wanna bullet proof your soul".. he wants to make her unable to feel that pain. "You're a bullet through my soul".. her inability to let him in.. "Should have listened when you called my name" ..He should have done something about it sooner, but too late.
I love the line "It's like fallin' backwards / into no one's arms"... Like the helplessness of his inability to reach her.
