I think it's just about the celebrity attached to serial killers, and our obsession with them. The author knew him personally before he knew about his crimes; he always took the time to talk to him, and he liked him for that; he was starting to like him a lot more, perhaps they would behave been good friends, as he was growing on him.. You the listener however, never knew him at all; the thing you like about him is the fact that he butchered people.
Not sure about the fact that it's just stopped snowing...
