Jessie J: Who You Are Meaning

Album cover for Who You Are album cover

Song Released: 2010

Who You Are Lyrics

(Verse)
I stare at my reflection in the mirror,
Why am I doing this to myself?
Losing my mind on a tiny error,
I nearly left the real me, on the shelf.

(chorus)
To lose who you are,
In the blur of the stars,
Seeing is...

She's just staring in the mirror watching herself suffering and wondering why she's acting like that, why she's doing that to herself, being droven crazy by every tiny mistake that she makes. "I nearly leave the real me on the shelf" - she's been about to change and turn into someone she's not actually, so she realises how close she's been to mess up.
    Chorus:
She wants to transmit young people to not stop being the way they want to, no matter how difficult things are and how much you have to try. Seeing things have the consequence of disappointment sometimes, but dreaming you can do things means that you can actually get them by working hard on it. "It's okay not to be okay" - she literally means that it correct to not be as the rest of the people in the world, because we're all different in a different way.

it's about staying true to yourself. Sometimes we tend to act like someone else because we want to be accepted and get people's approval but that's no help at all in fact doing so will only cost us at losing who we really are.i love the part where it says, "Don't lose who you are, in a blur of the stars" yeah sometimes we change ourselves just to fit in this society's unrealistic standards of beauty. We long for that sense of belonging.. but is it really worth it when in the end you lost your real identity ?? absolutely not...Just stay true to who you are and never lose yourself...

I think in this song she is pretty much saying that she let something get the best of her to the point that she doesn't realize who her true self is, and when she does realize it she doesn't like it. I also think she is talking about obstacles in her life and self esteem problems.

I struggle with depression and this song to me helped me to be more myself and to not let what others think of me get to my emotions."seeing is decieving, dreaming is believing, its ok not to be ok." Just that i shouldnt have to care about others opinions to love who i am as a person. "Sometimes its hard to follow your heart, tears dont mean your losing everbodys bruising, just be true to who you are."

I believe that the first verse if the song refers to self harming perhaps because of people putting others down which results in low self esteem when it says "why am I doing this to myself?". And in gerneral the song is about not changing yourself to make on with others because everyone is perfect as they are by just being themselves.
Important got everyone to ALWAYS remember that! ❤

I really love this song and I think everyone understands that this is telling you to not change who you are for anything in the world, it’s better to be ourselves than lie and pretend we’re someone else.

love this song, it's extremely relevant in today's youth and society, and being true to who you are and not hiding into the labels everyone expects you to follow is how everyone should live there life. Just because it hurts to do so isn't something bad, just means your living life

I think it means spending so much time trying to fit in is gonna get you nowhere . Acting like someone your not isnt real, be true to who you are really. To be hurting isnt a bad thing it shows you fighting the war in your life .
Im in love with this song, its on repeat <3 .

You should always be true to who you are, and always believe in yourself, because you are beautiful no matter what!
