Blue Monday Lyrics

How does it feel
When you treat me like you do
And you've laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are?

I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard your words
Tell me, how do I feel?
Tell me now, how do I feel?

Those who came before...

    "Blue Monday"

This song is clearly about judgement, control and abuse. It attempts to convey to the asshole that they would hate it if done to them so why do it to others.
Blue means sad and monday means 'start' or beginning.

These lyrics could easily be applied to the plight of women or to the gay culture but applies to any minority held down by hate and fear of others.
Below I attempt to translate the poetry.

    How does it feel
To treat me like you do
When you've laid laid your hands upon me
And told me who you are

(why do you judge me by hitting me,does that make you feel better? you showed me how you feel about me and who you are thru violence.)

    I thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me how do I feel
Tell me now how do I feel

(i now see how you think of me,I cannot fathom why you feel that way. You think you should tell me how to be but you have only reinforced (or killed) my views and thoughts about myself)

    Those who came before me
    Lived through their vocations
    From the past until completion
They will turn away no more

(others like me lived thru this but we will no longer take it)

And I still find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But I'm quite sure that you'll tell me
Just how I should feel today

(Id like to speak about your judgement but I know your mind will not change)

I see a ship in the harbor
(I know you want me gone)
    I can and shall obey
(I will leave-for my own safety)
But if it wasn't for your misfortunes
I'd be a heavenly person today

(you wish me dead but didnt get your way)

And I thought I was mistaken
And I thought I heard you speak
Tell me how do I feel
Tell me now how should I feel

(your hate speech is unreal and I know your mind wont change)

    Now I stand here waiting

    (gotta go)

I thought I told you to leave me
While I walked down to the beach
Tell me how does it feel
    When your heart grows cold
(grows cold, grows cold, grows cold)

(let me go and Ill leave, how can you hate so much?)

For me this song conjures up a story about the attack on Pearl Harbor. An American serviceman has fallen in love with a Japanese girl in Honolulu, and they arrange to meet on the beach. She doesn't turn up, and instead he sees the ships attacked and his shipmates are killed. (there's even a bit on the 12" that sounds like a plane flies over, then anti-aircraft guns fire, then there is a crash) He thinks that she must have been a spy and she tricked him, but really she saved him.

    It's about the Falklands?
And WE need to see a therapist?
Being empathetic is a good thing. I would feel safer if psychopathic personalities saw therapists more often.

This song is about their lead singer Ian Curtis who committed suicide on Sunday May 18, 1980. The rest of the group found out the next day.

New Wave from Britain was more often than not political. Blue Monday refers to Monday, June 14, 1983 when Argentina surrendered the Falkland Islands back to British sovereignty. Argentina, having a rich history in fascist dictatorships, was trying to capture the islands to divert public attention from the country's, chronic economic problems and the regime's ongoing human rights violations. (Jimmy Burns: The land that lost its heroes, 1987, Bloomsbury Publishing)
The person above who considers this song to be about an abusive relationship needs to seek out a therapist.
