You say it's hard enough to live,
It's not so bad, it's not so bad
How do you know that you're right?
I awoke on the roadside,
In the land of the free ride,
And I can't pull it any longer,

The song is just bringing words of encouragement. To tell us that it is even when you are nervous that you are right.
The offering of survival are the advices that are offered to us.
He also instances of two people. One did it the easy way by meeting with the devil and the other did it the hard way by pushing on even if the sun was beating down his neck. But higher and higher we are gonna be make it down to the wire we gonna it out of the fire.
It isn't hard to hold when it shine like gold.
This is my interpretation -

I agree with the whole salvation from God theory. This man has been offered survival but chooses to go his own way and 'run with the devil', whilst he makes up excuses of why what he is doing is okay.
"It aint hard to hold when it shines like gold", is the bad things or sin that this man is doing, but from an earthly perspective these things seem so good, and it isnt hard to do them when they're so appealing -

As a Christian, I see things from that perspective. This song helped me get out of doing drugs in high school. I almost got kicked out of school for doing it on campus, I lost a good percentage of my friends, and I didn't know where to go. One day that week I was listening to this song and it hit me like a car going 90 on the interstate. God has offered me survival, through Him, and I chose to ignore it. I wanted to do it my way and I screwed it up badly. I let the elements decide my fate. I let myself run with the devil for a bit. I was poor and tired, but God now shows me that I'm more than that. All of us are.
We're gonna make it out of the fire.
You may interpret this song how you want to, I for one highly believe that songs should not be taken from just one perspective. Put your own experiences into it. But this is how I see it =] -

I think this song is about (irrational) promises; how someone in a bad spot will believe anything that someone else is telling them. In truth, one will believe bullshit if they want something bad enough (it ain't hard to hold/when it shines like gold).
I listened to this song lots when I was in the process of leaving my wife of 9 years...for another woman; my high-school girlfriend, whom was also leaving her spouse. This was the song that 'perked up' me and the latter, as we tried to justify what we were in the process of doing.
