A Great Big World: Say Something Meaning
Song Released: 2013
Say Something Lyrics
I'll be the one, if you want me to.
Anywhere, I would've followed you.
Say something, I'm giving up on you.
And I am feeling so small.
It was over my head
I know nothing at all.
And I will stumble...

Thi cryed the first time i heard this song.I know it is about a relationship between a couple. Im talking about a father daughter relationship that use to be strong However, my dad in the last 2 years has became very sick, not going to go into details. The sickness has led to severe depression. I use to be daddy's girl, now 25 years old I haven't had a real conversation with him for four months other than yes, no, or yelling even with a simple question asked. My dad is still here he is still alive. I feel like I'm "giving up" on him. I want to "swallow my pride" and let my emotions go and tell him how I feel but I have never been that kind of girl nor has he been an emotional kind of guy. We are in fact quite the opposite. This song has sort of pushed me to work on that relationship with him because I refuse to give up on my dad he's not gone yet, and I want to cherish the relationship while he is still here even with him pushing me away with everything he has.

I can relate to this song. I hav been madly in love with this guy for about a year and a half. He didn't find out I had feelings for him until June but the problem was I was leaving schools. Then in the summer we were going to be in different countries. When I came back we encountered some problems which lead into discommunication. He wouldn't respond back to messages and it made me feel like shit. In November,I had to through out the question and ask him why we aren't speaking to each other. He responded back with a couple of paragraphs. He started lecturing me and then said I wasn't making effort. The funny thing I think the same thing because he never has time for me or tried texting me. He wants me to come up to him and make the first move. The next month we had finally meet up,I had to some what chase him down. We talked but it didn't lead to much. At the moment were in the same situation and I'm still madly in love with him. Even if we're far away from each, the lost couple of months I have been trying so hard so I can see him and I would do anything for him. At the moment I want him to say something to me because I'm giving up on him because I'm tried.

They love this person so much. They want the other to say they love them too. They will always love them anyone. It's a love so deep they will never forget them. Although they must let go and accept that their love is not returned they will never forget. I can relate.
-
This song is very touching. Both are singing simultaneously so it can be about how they feel individually or their to each other. Their love runs deep so what makes it complex is why they couldn't or didn't say something. They are both hurting. Even though they never expressed their feelings the feelings will always be there the love is to strong to really let go. It will always be there buried within. Real love is hard to come by you never forget those feelings.

This song is definatly about a complex relationship in which the way one expressed wasn't enough, and giving up was the only choice. But throughout the time they find out that they loved each other dearly but moving on was there only option. This is overall a beautiful song . -D.R

This song speaks to me about my very first love. She dumped me, no reason, and never spoke another word to me. My pride was wounded, and I was devastated by the loss too.
In return, I didn't make any effort to speak to her, and I never heard from her. There was one day when I had to come to terms with the fact that she would never change her mind.
I just wanted her to reach out, and say almost anything. She never did. I gave up on her.
It's been almost 40 years. I still haven't heard a peep. -
I heard the song before I saw the video. In my head I was thinking that this couple had lost a child to tragedy. Maybe the wife couldn't get over the death. Couldn't move on. The husband is trying hard to get her to move on with her life and see that they desperately need EACH other. They lose a child and then lose each other because one of them can't move on. Both lost to sorrow of loss.
-
This song is absolutely beautiful. I believe this song could be about suicide of a loved one. Having been through my share of hard times, this song kind of hits close to home for me. My father did 10 years ago, and hearing this song really puts it into perspective.
-
I really like this song. I have wondered why someone could be so scared to "say something". Maybe their scared of rejection or very closed off due to a bad relationship in the past. Either way it is a moving song that really tugs at the heart.
-
This song is definitely about a complicated relationship. He wants to be with the one he loves, and he is pleading for her to show any sign that she cares. In the end, he realizes she will not make the effort as he has been, and is letting her go.such a sad and beautiful song.

I think the song Say Something by A Great Big World is about feeling alone and lost.In the music video there is a couple and the girlfriend is breaking up with her boyfriend without saying anything. Also there is a elderly couple and they are in the hospital and the wife dies. Plus there is a little girl about 5 or 6 and she is alone so in my opinion the song is about feeling lost and alone.
-
I think this song is about bullying. I know it is way off from everyone else's perspective with relationships, but if you honestly listen to the lyrics, it fits in with what's happening with bullying these days. A kid is being bullied and possibly his best friend, or someone he really loves isn't speaking up for him so he "gives up" or commits suicide.
-
I think this song is about a complicated relationship where either the boy or girl in the couple are not talking about there struggles or problems in the relationship and are just ignoring the fact that they have issues. So, eventually someone gets fed up and feels like if he/she doesnt just say something they will just give up on the relationship.
-
This song expresses exactly what I just went through - a very complex relationship. We found each other at the wrong time of life. He was the "one". I loved him so much, but he used a self defense mechanism (put up some walls) that destroyed the loved we have built; I was forced to let go and had no option but to say goodbye with my silence. I will always love you (D) even in my silence. Beautiful song.
