It's a suicide. He's trying to reunite with a lost love in spirit after death. That's why he can "see you, be you," and that's also the harrowing scream and thud at the end. He's a jumper.

George, at this time was going through, Patti, his wife being in love with his friend Eric Clapton. George was immersed in his mysticism and didn't pay attention to Patti. Then after Patti was gone George realized how much he actually needed her. Thus creating this song.
