New York State of Mind Lyrics

Some folks like to get away

To me this song is about all the times I spent going there on a Greyhound bus from my university in upstate New York. Every other weekend I would take the bus from the unnamed small town I lived in to this giant metropolis I had come to love and admire. My heart would race as the bus pulled through the never ending Lincoln tunnel Into Port Authority bus terminal. I felt I had arrived where I belonged - I was in a New York State of mind.

this is a song that would mean more to a new yorker than probably anyone in a different part of the country. it has to be a certain day, and you have to be in an upbeat mood to take a ride around manhattan. you'll see the statue of liberty- ellis island the huge cruise ships docking and leaving the hudson river piers. billy said he read the new york times, but i bet he put it down and leaned back and as so many , myself included just gaze at the city and think what a lucky sob i am to live in the city that never sleeps
