   This is about the difficulty of maintaining relationships, according to Joel himself. The old hotel being torn down, and it being just as well, is one symbol of this. The old hotel on the beach would be a place where great memories were made, but those times are now past, and it's worn down and past it's use, time for something new, time to move on. Like with many relationships.
   Still, the song is hopeful, "You haven't seen everything a man can do, stick with me baby, I've got plans for you."

The protagonist wants to move forward with the relationship, but doesn't want to rush it. However, he senses that the current state of the relationship is a dead end, and not going to the next step will result in the end of the affair.
