Crazy as it may sound, I thought this song was some kind of tribute to or observation on the USA. With references to different geographical parts of the country and the passage of time. Of course the final verse seems to take us eons into the future. And becomes about existence and deeper questions.

Bob Seger wrote this song for his son when he was born as a reminder that though life will have its ups and downs that he will need to stay strong and go on the right path and that he’d be fine in life. It’s a fatherly wisdom being imparted to his son song. I bought the best of Bob Seger cassette and this song was on it and the meaning was on the sleeve cover. I’d never heard the song before, but it quickly became one of my favorites from him and when my brother had a son, I thought of the song often. My favorite part is ‘fields of green will tumble through your summer days’ and every time I see a green field, I think of this song.

Life is full of ups and downs, those things that take away your innocence but don't let the bad stuff make you bitter (keep your heart as open as a shrine)(this is just my interpretation and I've been wrong about songs before) anyways...whatever all THAT means, you'll be fine in your time
