Songs about Elvis
How do you know when you've made a huge impact on music? When other songwriters write enough songs about you to fill an album. Not just covering your songs or dedicating songs to you - no, writing actual, whole songs just about you. Behind Jesus, the virgin Mary, and perhaps the odd political figure, Elvis is probably the fourth actual person with the most songs about him.
Not every singer is exactly respectful of the King, but the King himself probably had enough of a sense of humor that he wouldn't disapprove. Certainly fewer songs are respectful of his fan base, and these people probably have a less jolly reaction to the rib at their expense. Whatever your attitude on Elvis, you can't deny that he cast a long shadow (and if you're out there, Your Majesty, we'd love an interview when you get the chance).
"Oh, and while the King was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned"
"Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White lightning, bound to drive you wild.
Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl
'Love me tender' leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle"
"Calling Elvis - is anybody home
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone"
"Then I heard them in the kitchen a-laughing and a-giggling
Singing hunka hunka burning love
She likes Elvis, she likes Andy"
"'Cause I'm an an Elvis imitator and I just can't stop
Imitating Elvis from the bottom to the top
Imitate the way he talked, the way he smiled
I throw away my scarf and make the crowd go wild
This imitation Elvis may not be the king
But baby I'm the next best thing"
"Tonight, Elvis is dead
And everyone's spread
And love is a satire"
"I saw Elvis in a U.F.O. sittin' there with Howard Hughes
I saw Elvis in a U.F.O. Jimmy Hoffa was in there too
I saw Elvis in a U.F.O., singing them rhythm and blues"
"Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain"
"Hey Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?
hey baby, are we losing touch?"
"Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through"
Gaslight Anthem, The
"God bless the boys from Memphis
Blue Suede Shoes and Elvis
Much too soon he left this world in tears"
