Songs about Farming
Green acres is the life for me! Agriculture is literally the oldest enabler of human civilization - before humans had a way to make food happen in one place consistently, they had to travel around to where the food was. It wasn't until we started to farm that the concept of real estate - this is my land because I tend it - was born, and next came cities, nations, and bureaucracy. So it's natural that farming would be a topic for many songs.
Here you'll find the music down on the farm to range from sappy psalms about the joys of digging your fingers into the warm, rich, brown soil to birth life from the loam, to rather bored attitudes that sound like they'd rather be back in the city than life a life smelling pig slop every morning. Count on farming being a song topic until we perfect growing genetically modified organisms in Petri dishes using robot labor.
"I can take you for a ride on my big green tractor
we can go slow or make it go faster
down through the woods and out to the pasture
long as I'm with you it really don't matter "
"It may sound a little funny
But you didn't make very much money
In them old cotton fields back home
It may sound a little funny "
"So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold"
"There's no life in these seeds
its the growth of disease
it's sowing season
in these forever fields"
"I'm the son of a third generation farmer
I've been married 10 years to the farmer's daughter
I'm a God fearing hardworking combine driver
Hogging up the road on my p-p-p-p-plower
Chug-a-lug-a-lugin 5 miles an hour
On my International Harvester"
"I'm like a John Deere Tractor
In a half acre field
Tryin' to plow a furrow
Where the soil is made of steel"
"He had one old mule he called Midnight
And I'd trailed along after them.
He used to plow them rows straight and deep
And I'd come along near behind
A-bustin' up clods with my own bare feet"
"She's the first one up the hayloft ladder
A girl like that's what a country boy's after
She cranks, she cranks, she cranks my tractor"
