I always thought the song was simply about leaving our earthly body and the image of the house was just an analogy for that. As we get older we get tired of expending energy on this shell that we carry around with us and it's about somebody getting ready To die. If you are progressing at all through life, you reach a point where the body becomes an encumbrance and your attention is drawn inward to spiritual things, to your souls progress, to things unrelated to the physical and that's what that song has always reminded me of
