I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the...

See, I agree with some interpretations of this song that it's about moving on, but couldn't it also be about being the best person can be, through the thick and thin and giving your all despite what happens... or that's how I see it anyway XD

It means drugs, obviously. He is in love with drugs but can't admit it. But his heart knows that the drugs are the best thing of his life.

Well, this song came out at a very bad dark time in my life. It felt as though Dave was singing to me... I was in an abusive relationship and was almost murdered by him. He took the best of me in every way of the word. He broke my trust, abused me both physically and emotionally draining me... Well now, Someone is getting the best of me, we will be married in June. When I hear this song, It reminds me how lucky and blessed I am today. I chose to resist in the end. Now I'm happy and loved.

This is a song about Kurt Cobain. Everytime Dave plays it he says this one is for you know who. and the album name is in your honor.

The singer asks, "Is someone getting the best of you?"

There are two ways to hear that phrase and I hear them both. In the first half of the song, the singer asks, "Is someone taking advantage of you?"

In the second half, the singer asks, "Are you truly giving your best effort to the ones you love?"

When you face the first question and answer "yes", you're being abused and you can you can choose to resist, refuse, to break loose. When you face the second and answer "no", remember it's the life, the love you'd die to heal.

Change your life right now. Give nothing but your best, every day.

    It's a double meaning:

    1) Is someone getting the best of you? Meaning... someone is taking advantage of you or is a thorn in your side and no matter how hard you try, they seem to get the best of you in the end.

    2) Is someone getting the best of you? Meaning... are you giving your best to someone (wife/husband, son/daughter, father/mother, friends, work, life in general. Are you being the best "you" that you can be?

In Storytellers Dave Grohl says he wrote this song for his sister who was in an abusive relationship and wouldn't leave. It was frustrating for him to have to watch her continue to divulge information to him about the horrors of the relationship but go back to it over and over.

The way I look at the song is a question posed to yourself. Is someone getting the best of you? not in the conventional sense of taking advantage of you, but rather, are you giving the best of yourself to someone you love.

Though it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, I like to believe this song is about sexual abuse.. I'm almost 100% sure it's not, but some of the lines describe being a victim of sexual abuse well.

Well I know this song was written for Kurt Cobain's wife. He wrote Best of You to her saying that he died for her and that's why he's saying he gave he the best.

It's about the struggle we have with loving each other, because of the issues we've experienced in life... "Everyone's got their chains to break".
