Fountains of Wayne: Firelight Waltz Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Firelight Waltz Lyrics
-
to me...a sympathetic, almost loving tribute and good wishes for all the down-trodden, forgotten, marginalized people of the world who feel sad, defeated or disappointed by life. The singer/song is wishing these people: peaceful, happy memories (of childhood), with dignity & comfort at the end of the day, or by the end of their life.

I take it as a song to a loved one. The images of "the end of the day" being metaphors for the end of her life. I hear permission to go find the light in an ideal place playing songs from her childhood and perfect firelight.
-
I live near Totten Pond Road (it's in Massachusetts) but I don't really understand the entire song. Fog in Barrels? Is that like rye perhaps?
-
Lots of images, but hard to tell if there's a story. People asleep on cots, then the 2nd verse I guess is Mary? She takes "a hit from her whiskey and stumbles inside". She's sitting in a chair drinking tea. I have no idea what that means. :)
