I'm Not Gonna Miss You Lyrics

I'm still here, but yet I'm gone
I don't play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am
The man that loves you 'til the end
You're the last person I will love
You're the last face I will recall
And best of all, I'm not gonna miss...

He will not be able to remember the love he felt for his wife. She will be the last woman he ever loves because he will no longer be. His loved ones and those of us that love him will be the ones hurting.

The song is a remarkably insightful, haunting and yet dispassionate foretelling of what is going to happen to the mind and emotions of a man with Alzheimer's Disease. He is telling his wife that she's the last one he'll love (because he's dying) and that she has the last face he'll remember (due to his progressive memory loss). It is so poignant because although other lovesongs may have lyrics about a love so great that it will be the last one, or about a woman whose beauty is such that will never be equalled. But those passionate lyrics embody the poetic license, and perhaps some hyperbole. In this instance, the writer is being absolutely, painfully, sorrowfully literal - he will not have other loves and there will be no new pretty faces. The deepest and most intense lyric is reflected in the title. "I'm Not Gonna Miss You," at first sounds like a spiteful threat to a lover gone astray; but here again, the lyric is meant literally - memory loss prevents missing someone, and ultimately an early death means the other partner will be doing the "missing." It's a bit of self-consolation; that although he'll be cutoff from his life and those he's loved because of his brain disease, he'll be spared the agony of loss which afflicts only those who retain memories.
