    I always thought this song was about heroin.

    the tethers are the tourniquet, the simple sweetness is the drugs.

    i heard this on the radio in my car after meeting my newborn grandson for the first time and said hey he is sweetness check out this awesome song, that has been my nickname for him ever since. He actually answers to sweetness when I call him that. thanks jimmy eat world!

    I think this is the ultimate breakup song. About a girl friend who has a hold on the guy but finally the "straps from your tether unwind". In the end the end he is able to break the emotional hold but he trades this in for the final melancholy realization that the form of happiness he hoped for that particular girl will never happen. However, he is free and wants everyone to know it which is why the songs starts out "if your listening...."


    I use to sing this song full volume in my jeep wrangler with the top down after breaking up with someone and it was just the greatest feeling in the world.
