Joy Division: New Dawn Fades Meaning
New Dawn Fades Lyrics
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied though you forget
Different colours, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless so...

It's about Bipolar. He is describing the detachment one feels and a loss of one's self that accompanies a bipolar depressive episode.
Everything looks, sounds, and smells different. It's not just an emotional state. It permeates your entire being, and you have little control. "Different colors, different shades, over each mistakes were made"
The tip off is the lines are, "it was me, waiting for, hoping for something more..." also the memory loss that comes "a chance to watch, admire the distance, still occupied though you forget" Depression is a cold, isolated place and knowing you will be there again and again is pure hell. -
He is NOT talking about waiting for a "particular" person. I believe with all of my one big unblinking eye, he was referring to basically the tiresome nature of being a old soul. You become like Marla on the mountain(Never Ending Story Reference). It's almost like you fade out of life's picture sometimes. There is almost nothing more you can cram into your "souls bag". You are too beyond the world to even fit in it or (sometimes want) to live in it anymore. It's just you, you see/ experience things others just can't, and you feel alienated and lonely by being so different. I can relate, fully.
