big star is a song about lorde's dog, pearl, who passed away in 2019. she's writing it to him, and about him, and lorde has said that is was largely written on a piano with pearl sitting beneath it.
i think most of the second verse and ending was written after he passed. "wanna take your picture 'till i die" and "every perfect summer's gotta take it's flight/i'll still watch you run through the winter light"
