It's mostly about branns sisters death and how the pain was enough to 'crack the skye' (skye was his sisters name hence the spelling). But it also plays into the concept of the album which is 'ethereal travel'. If you go to YouTube and search the concept, they can explain it better than I could. Classic song and a great album opener.

So, i think it's singing about a person that break up a relationship and fell in depression and vicious drugs.
