Missy Higgins: They Weren't There Meaning
They Weren't There Lyrics
-
This song kind of feels like its about entering a cult or closed community, after a breakup in a vulnerable state.
It also seems as though it could be about addiction.
It speaks to a certain level of shelter from the world that is needed to heal From something too painful to face alone.
She says she is waiting for the world to hear her story, knowing they could never understand. But she isn't bothered by their judgement, stating that the situation she was in and everything she experienced simply cannot be understood from the outside.
"...there beneath your stare/ stripped til they were there bare/ of any bindings from the world outside that room"
"...taken by the hand/ led through fields of naked land/ where any preconceived ideas were blown away/ and I couldn't say no" -
I'm not doubting your interpretation because I went to her concert recently and she said she struggled with her sexuality and it's close to her. I just think it's funny shes now pregnant and married. I wish I could just ask her! Maybe I can

She's dating a man, they break up, she has a fling with a woman and starts to question her sexuality. Everyone tells her that she is too young to know if she is a lesbian, and that she should forget about that and the guy that broke her heart, and just move on. But, she loves the woman and wants to be with for a long time and that she wants the world to know about it.
"And they weren't taken by the hand and led through fields of naked land where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away..." <3
p.s. if anyone doubts this, look it up, she's out as a lesbian :]
