Nirvana: Rape Me Meaning
Song Released: 1993
Rape Me Lyrics
Rape Me
Rape me
Rape me, my friend
Rape me
Rape me, again
I'm not the only one[4x]
Hate me
Do it and do it again
Waste me
Rape me, my friend
I'm not the only one [4x]
My favorite inside source
I'll kiss your open...

I'd never known Kurt had a plan to shoot a video for the song.My general feeling about this song kept on changing due to the continuous pieces of news I get to know what with Kurt himself saying,'It's an anti-rape song',and that its a reaction to the misinterpretation of Poly where it was originally intended to be an anti-rape song and many such views. But what I actually stick to is the what it felt to me when I first heard it.I had no idea it was an anti-rape song. All I could say was it was a guy who was being continuously mistreated and he hated this world and it suited me very well then and it still does!!!

Cobain told Spin, "It's like she's saying, 'Rape me, go ahead, rape me, beat me. You'll never kill me. I'll survive this and I'm gonna fucking rape you one of these days and you won't even know it.'"
-
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I dunno about you but I always thought it was about someone who gets raped by someone they know very well -a friend. I've heard about girls getting raped by male friends. ô Im not the only one ô I think the person is saying thathe or she aren't the only victims of the rapist.

Actually, some believe that this was directed at MTV, a long time friend of Nirvana.
During the rehearsal for the 1993 MTV Music Video Awards show, Kurt announced he was going to preform a song from their upcoming album, In Utero. MTV felt that the song was directed at them, and threatened to not air Nirvana's videos any more. Instead they did Come As You Are, their latest single, however Kurt sang a few lines from Rape Me over Come as You Are. -
This is NOT a song about anyone literally getting raped or somebody in prison being raped (seriously??)..it is Kurt's way of showing how much he is fed up with the media intruding in his life, and how they were making his band nothing more than a fad... he just wanted to create music and felt that the media was using ("raping") him with their persistence...it is not the story of a rape victim. Cobain was a truely deep man, and he would never lay it out for you like that, his lyrics had actual MEANING.

Firstly i am glad so many people take rape as a serious concern. It is strange though that in this particular song i did not interpret the lyrics in this way. i always thought the song to be about a guy asking a woman to kind of just have her way with him, to just take him and get it out of her system how angry she is with him, kind of offering her to not need to love him in that moment, but just use his body and get her hate and anger out.
i felt like the words, i'm not the only one, refer to him suggesting she is angry at not just him, but a lot of other stuff. the lyrics are rape me my friend, and to me he just used the exaggerated term of rape to be lyrically easier than just take me without needing to show affection or love, because i know you need to let the anger and hurt you have out. -
This song is about a guy that rapes a girl then goes to prison and gets raped himself. PLEASE REFER THE SONG "POLLY".

its a combination of both his exorcism from popularity by the media and also about a rapist who gets raped in jail and also his vote and support for equal rights amongst the female and gay community....kurt had many layers to his personality, don't you think its possible that his songs may have many layers to them also? his songs mean whatever you want them to believe..make your own interpretation.
-
Isn't this song about someone raping Kurt in his earlier years?
-
This song is actually about the process he uses to write his music. Not his lyrics mind you, but his guitar playing. Most guitarists have an individual system to their sound. Green Day (Billy Joe) and AC/DC (Angus) for example, have both got repeating patterns in probably 90% of their stuff. It is in fact about him raping himself, but he couldn't tell the feminists that. If you listen to teen spirit you will see rape me is a rythym match but not a note match (opposite steps). He did this on purpose to cement the irony, after hearing critism about how all the songs on nevermind kind of sound the same. Do it and do it again, his inside source, am I the only one?... No Cobain, you're not the only one, lots of us do it. RIP to the Lizard Prince. -MrMojoRizing

One of you is close.
Kurt Cobain wrote Rape Me about his guilt over having raped a mentally disabled girl while he was a teenager.
that's it. It's not an interpretation, it's a fact. -
I dunno, I always saw this as how much Kurt felt he had to put into each performance and how draining it was, that and the whole entertainment industry in general. I've heard of him describing it as the story of the guy who raped a girl and then went to jail and got raped but still considering that he was severly depressed I wouldn't be surprised if that was a cover for the true meaning. A retelling of how he's raped by each performance.
-
There's a lot of interpretations of the song and maybe that's because that's exactly what Cobain wanted. He wanted everyone to make up their own things that's why he didn't talk about his songs much.
