Fade Away Lyrics

When I was young
I thought I had my own key
I knew exactly what I wanted to be
Now I'm sure
You've boarded up every door

Lived in a bubble
Days were never ending
Was not concerned
About what life was sending
Fantasy was real
Now I...

    "When I was young
I thought I had my own key
I knew exactly what I wanted to be
    Now I'm sure
    You've boarded up every door"

-- To me; the key represents the key to your "dreams" (thus dreams = doors). You knew that's what you wanted as a kid, and now (much older) someone "boarded up every door". In other words someone told you "you can't follow your dreams!".

    "Lived in a bubble
    Days were never ending
    Was not concerned
    About what life was sending
    Fantasy was real
    Now I know much
    About the way I feel"

-- You lived in a "bubble", not knowing what "would've been". And thus, not concerned to what life was bringing you (you were miserable with life). As a kid "Fantasy was real" = Anything was possible (remember those days?). And the final line is you realizing how you are feeling.

    "I'll paint you the picture
'Cause I don't think you live round here no more
    I've never even seen
    The key to the door
We only get what we will settle for "

-- Somewhat hard to interpret this part; possibly "'cause I don't think you live round here no more" = Someone he is telling his story to doesn't live in this "bubble" anymore and he is going to give him an idea of how it was for him "...paint you a picture". The part about "not seeing the key to the door, we only get what we will settle for" = Kinda like saying, "Don't remember how long ago I used to believe in having dreams, now I'll just get what society puts in front of me.

    "While we're living
The dreams we have as children
    Fade away
    While we're living
The dreams we have as children
    Fade away
    While we're living
The dreams we have as children
    Fade away, away, away
    They fade away, away, away"

-- Giving a summary of what's happened; the dreams you used to have as a child are now fading away.

    "Now my life has turned
    Another corner
    I think it's only best
    That I should warn you
    Dream it while you can
Maybe someday I'll make you understand"

-- The part about "his life turning another corner" possibly for the worse or for the best. And the rest is about him telling the person he is talking to, to "Dream it while you can" = Always follow your dreams, don't let them slip away and that someday that person will understand.

    /End
